Now, ahead of the 2023 BAFTAs, we’ve compiled the best vintage photos from ceremonies past, featuring everyone from Elizabeth Hurley in all her ’90s glory to a 19 year old Kristen Stewart, the recipient of the 2010 Rising Star award. A radiant big screen presence since the ’90s, Michelle Yeoh has plenty of red carpets under her belt. So, what’s her ultimate essential when it comes to awards season prep? “Masks, masks, masks!” she tells Vogue ahead of the BAFTAs, where she is nominated for Best Actress for her formidable performance in the audacious Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Though the star is something of a red carpet veteran at this point, this year’s whirlwind of ceremonies is a particularly special one, given that Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s unlikely critical smash has finally brought Yeoh the mainstream recognition she deserves. (She’s also in the running for the Best Actress Oscar, and if successful, will be the first nominee who identifies as Asian to take home the trophy in the 95 year history of the Academy Awards.) “This journey has been so exciting, to say the least,” says Yeoh. “Overwhelming at times, but nonetheless inspiring.”
